Northpointe Afterschool Program hosts Plant & Sip Community Event in Honor of Earth Day

In honor of Earth Day, the Better Days Integrated Program’s afterschool program at Northpointe hosted a Plant & Sip community event on Friday evening.

In partnership with COR Community Development Corporation, Northpointe hosts monthly events that specifically welcome adults in the community as a place to hang out, explore the afterschool program’s space, and engage in fun programming.

As community members filtered into the room, paint, markers, brushes and other decorative materials were on the table, along with blank planters and planter boxes. Music filled the room and guests sat down and began designing their planters.

Northpointe Program Manager of Enrichment Services Jenean Thomas and new staff member Bridelia Moncrease surveyed the room as they chatted with community members and praised their designs. Kimberly Weldon, COR resident services coordinator, greeted guests as she set up the food station filled with assorted chips, chicken wings and sliders.

Thomas explained that adult-centered community events are just as important as child-focused events because adults in the community need attention and care as well.

“I think a lot of the time for these types of things, adults get overlooked. So, these adults are living in this environment, just like the kids are, and they need a moment to de-stress,” Thomas shared. “They do need that time and attention that's just catered to them, to de-stress, to have no worries about what's happening on the outside, to just zone it all out and focus on themselves.”

As the event came to a close, staff members voted on the best three planter designs. Winners received a decorative medal and gift cards ranging from $25 to $100.

“It's just really satisfying to see the purpose of the events being fulfilled,” Thomas said.
